TRIP RATING

Easy walking tours, optional camel riding, and some long drives.

In Rajasthan, there are reminders everywhere of an era when warrior-kings ruled the land. We travel in royal style – staying in palace hotels, strolling through rambling ancient hill forts, and shopping for jewelry fostered by those bygone rulers. Men in neon yellow turbans with soup-strainer moustaches vie for attention with women wrapped in saris of screaming orange and flaming magenta. Traditional desert culture is one of Rajasthan’s enchantments and a camel trek provides a glimpse into rural Rajasthani culture and the traditions of the Thar Desert. We also enjoy a sunrise visit to the Taj Mahal. After all, what journey in the land of palaces would be complete without a visit to the Taj?

India Adventure Tour Overview

Days 1-3: Our adventure begins in Delhi, India, and we explore Delhi's imposing Red Fort and monuments of the Moghul Empire, then head to Agra for sunrise at the Taj Mahal, "the proud passion of an emperor's love, wrought in living stones," as English poet Sir Edward Arnold wrote.

Days 4-6: We travel to the famed “Pink City” of Jaipur, a showcase for Rajasthan's distinctive architecture. Explore the Hawa Mahal ("Palace of the Winds") and other sights, including the Amber and City Palaces. Enjoy free time for shopping and exploring on your own.

Days 7-8: Today we head for the colorful Rajasthani countryside. Our home for the next two nights, in the rural town of Shahpura, is an 1880’s country residence that was built as a summer home for the rulers of Shahpura. The surrounding area abounds with more than three hundred lakes, and is a migratory paradise, which ensures a heady mix of desert and oasis.

Day 9: Our exploration of the countryside continues as we speand a peaceful night surrounded by lush green fields of wheat, mustard, cotton and chilis, and vast grazing pastures, at luxury tents overlooking a hundred-year-old reservoir -- an ideal getaway from city life.

Days 10-11:  A camel safari (or jeep if you prefer) brings us through the Thar Desert and to traditional Rajasthani villages where we visit local artisans. All along our route we visit tribal dwellings and spot various desert wildlife. Our mobile tented camp provides a comfortable and secure haven, and we drift off into the desert night with evening folk entertainment followed by a candlelit dinner. After breakfast we resume our safari before spending a final night in the desert at a luxurious permanent camp.

Days 12-14We emerge fromt the desert to explore Jodhpur, a gated 15th-century city of temples, palaces, gardens, and bustling bazaars. A return flight brings us to Delhi, where we enjoy a farewell dinner at our favorite restaurant. Transfer to the airport for departure.

Step Away from the Ordinary ~ India Adventure

"I like the evening in India, the one magic moment when the sun balances on the rim of the world, and the hush descends, and ten thousand civil servants drift homeward on a river of bicycles..."
-James Cameron
