Everything You Need to Know about Sky Safaris

What is a sky safari?

A mountain looms in the distance while zebras and wildebeest graze in the midground

When you hear the phrase “sky safari,” your mind may wander to scenes of Meryl Streep and Robert Redford soaring above the Masai Mara in a single prop plane in Out Of Africa. That image is partly true—you’ll still witness the majesty of destinations such as Kenya and Tanzania, but you’ll experience a luxury and ease of travel the movie’s protagonists definitely did not.

If you don’t have extra days to burn in transit, then a sky safari will give you the most value for your time. Instead of traveling overland from one Kenya safari camp to the next, you’ll be transported efficiently on private planes.

Why reserve a sky safari over a traditional overland safari?

When you think of the travel time from your home airport to a major African city, then the travel time out to the African bush, it adds up. There’s still value in exploring via a traditional overland safari; however, a sky safari gets you to the action that much faster. In some itineraries, it can save over 21 hours of travel time, netting you nearly an extra day’s worth of exploring.

Apart from the time saved, sky safaris are also a unique option for safari aficionados. If you’ve already experienced an overland safari, then this could be your next step.

What to expect on a sky safari

From the start, you can expect to fast-track through airports and board direct flights immediately. With no waiting around and no unnecessary connections en route, you’ll be whisked straight into the wilderness.

Boundless Journeys uses private planes that only have nine seats, and offer epic views from extra-large pane windows that would make Streep and Redford jealous.

We work with a handful of unique boutique camps and lodges that combine style and comfort with unparalleled surroundings. Think a luxury tree house lodge while on safari in Tanzania or drifting off to sleep in a Loisaba Star Bed, a luxurious four-poster bed that can be wheeled onto a veranda overlooking a waterhole for panoramic views under a canopy of stars.

What about the environmental Impacts?

At Boundless Journeys, we are committed to exploring the world in a responsible manner. This was top of mind when designing our sky safaris. Rest assured we are committed to conserving the wild places and the livelihoods of local communities. All our sky safaris compensate for flight emissions and support community conservation.

Boundless Journeys offers two options for sky safaris:

Our Kenya Sky Safari touches down in the shadow of Mount Kilimanjaro in Amboseli National Park. You’re then whisked away to Loisaba Conservancy on the Laikipia Plateau, and your safari adventure ends in the incredible Masai Mara. V

Another option is the Tanzania Sky Safari, which enables you to cover a large swath of land from Tarangire National Park, the Serengeti, Rift Valley, Lake Manyara National Park, and Ngorongoro Crater. All of this is accomplished in 10 days.

Boundless Journeys specializes in all-inclusive active tours and wilderness safaris around the world. Discover your next adventure among our Africa safaris.
