Thus acclimatized, you’ll ascend to the top of Salkantay Pass, a spot whose panoramic views are only rivaled by a glimpse of the gigantic Andean condors. Descending into the Santa Teresa river valley, you’ll hike through banana, granadilla, and avocado orchards, as well as shade-grown coffee plantations. Your trail to Machu Picchu then leads to the Llactapata Pass, whose architectural ruins were recently restored. At Machu Picchu, you’ll tour the Incan citadel, embark on optional hikes on nearby mountains, and learn the history and some of the secrets of this bewitching, ancient place.
